LAGUNA
BEACH, CA. |
| |
With all there is to do in Laguna Beach, you could spend an
entire week exploring beaches, art galleries, canyons and shops.
The city is ideally suited as a base from which to explore other
coastal portions of Orange County. Below is an example of how
you might ‘theme’ your stay in Laguna.
Day One: Beaches and Boutiques
Check out the sea lions off Crescent Bay; snorkel at Diver’s
Cove. Stroll the blufftops of Heisler Park; play basketball
or volleyball at Main Beach. Walk the beach south to Brooks
Street; explore Treasure Island Park and Aliso Creek Beach.
Shop at art galleries, antique shops and boutiques along Coast
Highway. End your day with dinner at one of the city’s
popular eateries, or enjoy an oceanfront dinner at one of the
hotels.
Day Two: Artistic Endeavors
If it’s summer, spend the entire day enjoying the Festival
of Arts, Sawdust Festival, Art-A-Fair and the Pageant of the
Masters; in the fall, visit Winter Fantasy or a Laguna Arts
& Craft Guild show or free concert sponsored by Laguna Beach
Live. Explore some of the town’s 100 art galleries or
take part in a First Thursdays Art Walk. Enjoy public art displayed
throughout the city and visit the Laguna Art Museum. Top off
your day with a performance at the Laguna Playhouse, or one
of Laguna’s nightspots for jazz, blues and rock music
nightly.
Day Three: Canyon Capers
Try an easy short hike or a three-hour trek in Laguna Coast
Wilderness Park.
Hike Aliso/Woods Canyon Wilderness Park from the visitor center
in Laguna Niguel or hilltop parks in Laguna Beach.
At Crystal Cove State Park, visit the beachfront historic district
with century-old cottages. Head to Heisler Park for picnicking,
Lang Park for tennis and basketball, or Treasure Island Park
for beach and tidepool access.
Day Four: Savoring Self-Improvement
Schedule a full day of spa treatments, or find a fresh, new
look to impress the folks back home. Check out classes at the
local School of Culinary Arts or public art classes at Laguna
College of Art & Design. Local instructors offer surfing
and diving lessons; work on your golf swing at Aliso Creek Golf
Course.
Day Five: A Peek at the Past
Start with a Heritage Walk of Laguna’s diverse neighborhoods
using a map from the Visitors & Conference Bureau that will
point you to 1900s-era cottages.
Stop at Hotel Laguna and the Murphy Smith Historical Bungalow
for a photographic glimpse of early Laguna.
Near Main Beach, stop to see the “Laguna Greeter”
statue that commemorates Eiler Larson, who spent many years
on this corner greeting passersby. Visit the Hortense Miller
Garden, a 2.5-acre preserve in North Laguna with 1,500 plant
species.
Visit one of the California Missions at San Juan Capistrano,
just 15 minutes away.
Day Six: Sports Safari
Show off your sports stuff today at city-owned tennis courts,
basketball courts and beach volleyball courts, rent a bike for
a brisk ride through town, or play a round of golf at the nine-hole
Aliso Creek Golf Course. If you want to get in 18 holes, Monarch
Beach Golf Club and Pelican Hill are just a few miles from Laguna
Beach.
Day Seven: Ocean Adventures
Take a guided tidepool tour, or explore the Glenn E. Vedder
Ecological Reserve off the coast at Heisler Park. Take
a surfing lesson from a local instructor. Rent a kayak; take
a guided kayak tour or visit the California sea lion sanctuary
in Laguna Canyon. Body surf at Brooks Street or skim board at
Victoria Beach. Take a cruise to Catalina Island from Dana Point
or Newport Beach
